Who Is PHMSA And What Do They Do?
Many shippers know the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA) as the writers of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) found in 49 CFR 171-180. However, what many shippers don’t know is that PHMSA does a lot more than just write the HMR. All that and more is taught in 49 CFR Training.
For example, the Outreach and Training Branch within PHMSA provides many valuable compliance tools that are free to the public. Most are available in PDF format and hardcopy by mail.
What Chart 17 Is And Why It Matters
Most recently, PHMSA released CHART 17. It is the most recent in a series of publications to assist shippers, carriers, and others. The purpose is to allow quick access to key information regarding hazardous materials markings, labels, and placards. While you can learn the details about all of this through 49 CFR training, CHART 17 is available in PDF and hard copy as well as in a free app in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Updates in CHART 17 include:
- Removal of old lithium battery handling mark;
- Removal of the ORM-D marking;
- Removal of the outdated Class 9 label design; and
- Addition of the white square-on-point marking as an appropriate display of a 4 digit UN number.
